Studio portrait of 1662 Private John David Lockley Craven, 50th Battalion who was a 24 year old draper from Medindie, South Australia when he enlisted on 6 September 1915. He embarked for overseas with the 2nd Reinforcements from Adelaide on 11 April 1916 aboard HMAT Aeneas. He saw active service in France and Belgium and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on 29 November 1917 and promoted to Lieutenant on 14 May 1918. He was wounded in action on three occasions, the last one causing his evacuation to England and return to Australia. Lieutenant Lockley arrived back in Australia on 14 June 1919. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
