Studio portrait of SX9990 Major Hurtle Cummins Morphett who was a 34 year old when he joined the Army on 2 August 1940. He served with the 2/48 Australian Infantry Battalion in the Middle East, participating in the defence of Tobruk and El Alamein and in New Guinea. While serving in New Guinea, he was awarded the Military Cross (MC) for courageous and skilful leadership at Finschhafen. Major Morphett was demobilised on 30 July 1945. One of 86 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the Second World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
