Studio portrait of NX68902 Private (Pte) Clarence George (Clarrie) Picton, 9th Supply Personnel Company, of Narrabri, NSW. A grocer prior to enlistment, Pte Picton served in Malaya. He was taken as a prisoner of war with the 2/18th Battalion when Malaya fell to the Japanese in 1942. Initially imprisoned in Changi prisoner of war camp, many members of the 2/18th Battalion worked on the Burma-Thailand railway and in Borneo and Japan. Pte Picton was one of hundreds of Australian and British prisoner's of war being moved to Japan aboard the Rakuyo Maru when it was attacked by USS submarine Sealion II on 12 September 1944. Pte Picton was reported missing and presumed dead on 14 September 1944. He was 21 years of age.
