Portrait of Thomas Edward Phipps. Phipps, of Oxford, England, enlisted on 15 August 1870 in the 10th Royal Hussars (Prince of Wales Own) regiment of the British Army with rank of Private (Pte) and service number 1131. He served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War and on 9 January 1873 embarked for Muttra, India. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 23 May 1879, however reverted to Pte on 24 February 1880. He returned to England on 25 November 1882 and discharged on 31 March 1883.
