Studio portrait of 1877 Private (Pte) Charles Roy (Charlie) Brown, 53rd Battalion, of Cowra, NSW. A labourer prior to enlistment, Pte Brown embarked on board HMAT Barambah (A37) on 23 June 1916. After 6 months training in the UK he arrived in France and joined the 17th Battalion on 21 March 1917. Pte Brown was killed in action at Bullecourt on 15 April 1917. He was 19 years of age.
