Description

Studio group portrait of three junior officers. Left to right: Charlie ? (possibly Lieutenant Charles Olden Graham, 46th Battalion); Lt Smith and Lt Sherpherd [sic]. A message on the reverse reads: "Dear all, I don't think I've sent you many photos, so here's one right from the mud & stink of "sunny" France, & taken within sound and reach of the German guns. I guess you can pick outs my grim "dial", the officer sitting down is Lt Smith of the pioneer battalion, & the other Lt Sherpherd (sic), Transport Officer in -nd Bn [an abreviated self-censored reference to Sherpherds battalion], they billet here with me. The girls at the farm here reckon I looked "vexed", & its a funny think, while I was posing, I thought I'd try and look pleasant, anyway I've got a wartime look. Love to all, Charlie"
