Description

Studio portrait of 1211 Private (Pte) Donald Torquil McLeod, 33rd Battalion, of Tamworth NSW. A carpenter prior to enlistment on 6 January 1916, Pte McLeod embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Marathon (A74) on 4 May. He died of wounds at the 9th Field Ambulance DressingStation, Belgium on 10 June 1917, aged 20. His eldest brother, 857 Pte Malcolm MacLeod, (alias Normal Cameron) died of wounds following the landings at Gallipoli; another brother 736 Pte Alexander Mcleod, was invalided to Australia due to severe wounds also received in the field at Gallipoli. The youngest brother 2875 Pte Hector Gordon McLeod was discharged in 1919.
