Studio portrait of 1062 Private (Pte) Henry Max Stanford, 43rd Battalion of Farina, SA. A labourer prior to enlistment on 13 December 1915, Pte Stanford embarked from Australia aboard HMAT Afric (A19) in June 1916. He was killed in action on 24 April 1917 at Oosthove Farm near Ploegsteert Wood, Belgium, and is buried at the Strand Military Cemetery. His younger brother SX1668 Private Lawrence William Stanford, was killed in action at Milne Bay, New Guinea on 27 August 1942, aged 37.
