Description
Studio portrait of 5991 Private (Pte) Fred Bradley Cox, 8th Battalion, of Beulah, Vic. A farmer before enlisting in April 1916, Pte Cox left Australia for England with the 19th Reinforcments in July 1916, was transferred to the 39th Battalion in August 1916 (where his serial number became 5991A), and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in September 1917. Pte Cox was killed in action at Broodseinde Ridge on 4 October 1917, aged 31. Although he was listed as being 'buried in the field', the location of his grave became lost, and consequently has no known grave. It is listed on his service record that Pte Cox had originally volunteered for service in 1914, but was rejected on the grounds of a cardiac bruit.
