Informal outdoor portrait of Sergeant (later Flying Officer (FO)) Geoffrey Ireland of Perth, WA. ...
Description
Informal outdoor portrait of Sergeant (later Flying Officer (FO)) Geoffrey Ireland of Perth, WA. Enlisting in the RAAF in June 1940, FO Ireland trained as an Aerial Gunner, and was posted to the No 3 Operational Training Unit (3OTU) at RAAF Rathmines, NSW. FO Ireland was listed as missing when his Catalina aircraft, serial number IB279, disappeared on a ferry flight between Suva and Rathmines on 4 February 1944. Despite attempts by the RAAF to determine what had happened to IB279, FO Ireland and his four other crew members were listed as being accidentally killed.
