Studio portrait of 6998 Private (Pte) Clarence Freeman, 10th Battalion, of Wallaroo, SA. A farmer before enlisting in October 1916, Pte Freeman left Australia for England with the 23rd Reinforcements in December 1916, and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in May 1917. Pte Freeman was killed during a German artillery barrage on Anzac Ridge near Zonnebeke, Belgium, on 2 October 1917. He was buried in a shell hole nearby, however his grave was unmarked and its location remains unknown.
