Description
Studio portrait of NX70472 Major (Maj) Gordon Richard Jones, 2/2 Field Ambulance, of Waratah, NSW. A medical practitioner in civilian life, Jones enlisted with the Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC) on 17 September 1940. Maj Jones was killed at sea aboard the Hospital Ship Centaur on 14 May 1943, aged 30. MV Centaur was made available by the Ministry of War Transport for conversion to a hospital ship in January 1943, for use in the New Guinea area. At approximately 4 am on Friday 14 May 1943, during a voyage northwards, Centaur was off Brisbane at Point Lookout, on Stradbroke Island, when she was struck without warning by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine. She sank quickly with a loss of 268 lives.
