Studio portrait of NX59181 Sergeant (Sgt) Alan George Black, 2/18th Battalion, of Lindfield, NSW. After training in Sydney and Bathurst as part of the 22nd Brigade, 8th Division, the 2/18th Battalion left Sydney for Singapore on 4 February 1941. The unit underwent further training in Malaya and prepared defensive positions against the imminent Japanese invasion. Sgt Black, aged 25, was killed in action in Malaya on 9 February 1942.
