Description

Studio portrait of 784 Private (Pte) Joseph Benjamin Robert Horne, 24th Battalion, of Sheep Hills, Vic. He embarked with the Headquarters Details unit, 24th Battalion from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides on 10 May 1915. After serving for a short period at Gallipoli, Pte Horne proceeded to France in May 1916. Later transferring to the 6th Machine Gun Company, he was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal on 5 October 1917 while serving in Belgium. Four days later, on 9 October 1917, L Cpl Horne was killed in action at Broodseinde Ridge, aged 21. He has no known grave and is memorialised on the Menin Gate at Ypres, Belgium.
