Studio portrait of 1116 Private (Pte) Charles Herbert Cane, 2nd Battalion, of Batemans Bay, NSW. A labourer prior to enlistment, Pte Cane embarked with the 1st Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Themistocles on 22 December 1914. On 27 April 1915 he was killed in action at Gallipoli, aged 20. Pte Cane's brother Private Depot Henry Wilson Cane died in the Base Hospital in Melbourne on 23 May 1915, after four months in Broadmeadows Camp.
