Studio portrait of 2856 Private (Pte) Cyril Spencer Luke, 17th Battalion, of Baulkham Hills, NSW. A blacksmith before enlisting in August 1915, Pte Luke left Australia for Egypt with the 6th Reinforcements in November 1915 and after transferring to the 14th Machine Gun Company in March 1916, arrived in France for service on the Western Front in June 1916. He was killed by machine gun fire during the attack on German positions near Fromelles on the night of 19/20th July 1916, aged 20, and has no known grave.
