Outdoor group portrait of 4979 Private (Pte) Albert John (Jack) Bettles, 23rd Battalion, of Kew, Vic (previously of Bright, Vic), and his family. Standing, left to right: Eunice; Letitia; and Gwendolin. Seated: Pte Bettles; Albert John William Bettles; and Helen Christine Bettles. A grave digger prior to enlistment, Pte Bettles embarked with the 13th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Armadale on 19 July 1916. Having been promoted to Corporal, he was killed in action in France on 3 May 1917, aged 40.
