Wedding portrait of WX20056 Private (Pte) Dennis Grimwood, 2/28 Battalion from Westonia, Western Australia and his wife Phyllis May Grimwood. A 31 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 17 September 1941, Pte Grimwood embarked for overseas from Fremantle on 6 September 1942 and spent the next three months in the Middle East, mostly at Alamein. The 2/28th left Alamein in December 1942 and went to Gaza in Palestine to participate in the 9th Division parade on 22 December. In January 1943 the battalion left Palestine for the Suez Canal, from where it was sailed back to Fremantle, arriving on 18 February 1943. After training on the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland, Pte Grimwood embarked from Cairns on 4 August 1943 and disembarked in Milne Bay one week later. On 9 September 1943 Pte Grimwood went missing in action during the crossing of the Busu River, near Lae. It is not known whether he was drowned or killed by Japanese gunfire. Pte Grimwood is commemorated on the Lae Memorial with others who have no known grave.
