Studio portrait of TX2016 Captain (Capt) Rupert Anstice (Pat) Rafferty, 2/12 Battalion, of Hobart, Tas. Capt Rafferty was a forest ranger prior to enlisting as a lieutenant in November 1939. He was promoted to Temporary Captain in June 1940 and to Captain in April 1942. Capt Rafferty served at Tobruk, Libya, from April to August 1941, and then in Palestine and Syria. In August 1942 the 2/12 Battalion arrived in New Guinea. Capt Rafferty, aged 27, was killed in action at Milne Bay, New Guinea, on 5 October 1942. His father, Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Anstice Rafferty (Snr) was awarded the Distinguished Service Order during the First World War.
