Informal portrait of two Australian soldiers and a local man. Identified is, right, NX6758 Corporal (Cpl) Arthur Appel, 2/1 Headquarters Guard Battalion, of Belmore, NSW. Cpl Appel was a boilermaker before he enlisted on 25 Oct 1939 at Newtown, NSW. He died of wounds in New Guinea on 24 September 1943, at the age of 39. He sent this photograph as a postcard written at sea to his mother, saying 'I can't tell you where this photo was taken till later on after we settle down in our new camp some where in the East'.
