Description
Studio portrait of 3716 Private (Pte) Eric Arthur Oswald Williams (left), 4th Pioneer Battalion, and an unidentified soldier prior to embarkation. A native of Dubbo, NSW, Pte Williams worked as a mechanic prior to enlistment. He embarked with the 9th Reinforcements from Sydney aboard HMAT Ayrshire on 24 January 1917. During the journey to England Pte Williams was admitted to the ship's hospital on 7 February 1917. Two days later, on 9 February, he died of cerebro spinal meningitis, and was buried at sea.
