Studio portrait of 940 Private (Pte) David Livock Stewart, 31st Battalion, of Newstead, Vic. A farmer prior to enlistment, Pte Stewart embarked on board HMAT Wandilla on 9 November 1915. He served in Palestine and was appointed Lance Corporal in February 1916. In March 1916 he was posted to the 5th Division Artillery as a gunner. He served in France from June 1916, finally transferrring to the 13th Field Artillery. On 22 August 1917 Gunner (Gnr) Stewart was killed in action at Ypres. He was 21 years of age. Gnr Stewart's brother, 718 Pte John Malcolm Stewart, 10th Machine Gun Company, was awarded the Military Medal in 1918.
