Studio portrait of 412681 Flying Officer (FO) Sydney Larner Porter, 23 Squadron RAAF, of Newport, NSW. FO Porter, a produce salesman prior to enlistment, was killed in a flying accident off the coast of Queensland, near Horne Island on 4 May 1944, aged 23. FO Porter's father and four uncles served in the First World War. 4544 Private (Pte) Carl Horwood Porter (father of FO Sydney Porter), 3rd Battalion, and 3454 Sergeant Robert Daniel Porter MM, 1st Battalion, survived the war. 4546A Pte Sidney George Porter, 53rd Battalion, 1013 Pte William James Porter, 13th Battalion, and 4547 Pte Albert Edward Porter, 3rd Battalion, were killed in action. FO Porter had three brothers who served in and survived the Second World War.
