Studio portrait of 4134 Sergeant (Sgt) Laud Rupert Somerville Provan, 30th Battalion. A native of Malvern, Vic, he worked as an accountant prior to enlistment. While training in Australia he attended schools of instruction in musketry and bombing, qualifying for the rank of Sergeant in March 1916. Sgt Provan embarked with the 10th Reinforcements from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic on 7 October 1916. Later reverting to the rank of Corporal, he was killed in action in France on 18 May 1917, aged 24, and was buried at Vaulx Hill Cemetery, France. Corporal Provan was one of four brothers to enlist during the First World War. All three other brothers, 33090 Gunner Aubrey Dundas Somerville Provan; 17230 Driver Vivian William Somerville Provan and 4135 Private Roy Evelyn Percival Somerville Provan, survived the war.
