Studio portrait of 6785 Private (Pte) John Charles Marchant, 7th Battalion. A native of Winchester, England, Marchant worked as a commercial traveller prior to enlistment. He embarked with the 22nd Reinforcements from Sydney aboard SS Port Napier on 17 November 1916. While serving in Belgium during the Ypres offensive of late 1917, Pte Marchant was listed as missing in action during the battle for Broodseinde Ridge on 4 October 1917. Unofficial reports received by the Australian Red Cross indicate that Pte Marchant was killed by a shell while the battery was assembling to launch an attack, and was buried nearby. He was later officially reported killed in action on 4 October 1917, aged 24. Pte Marchant has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
