Studio portrait of 5130 Private (Pte) Charles Samuel Knowles, 2nd Battalion, of Redfern, NSW. A tinsmith prior to enlistment, Pte Knowles embarked on board HMAT Makarini with the 2nd Battalion, on 1 April 1916. He served with the 54th Battalion in France and Belgium. On 22 April 1918, Pte Knowles was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux, France, when a shell exploded in his trench. He was 22 years of age.
