Description

Outdoor portrait of brothers, Claude Jabez Powter (left), and 4919 Private (Pte) Ernest Lachlan Powter, 1st Battalion, both of Petersham, NSW. A junior clerk prior to enlistment, Pte Ernest Powter embarked with the 15th Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Star of England on 8 March 1916. After transferring to the 53rd Battalion, he was killed in action on 1 November 1916 in France, aged 16. His brother Claude enlisted as a gunner with the 36th Australian Heavy Artillery Group and embarked with the 6th Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Beltana on 13 May 1916. Gnr Claude Powter was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal, gazetted 3 September 1918, and returned to Australia on 27 April 1919.
