Studio portrait of VX15157 Major (Maj) Walter Harold Mitchell, Torres Strait Pioneer Company, of Coburg, Victoria. Major Mitchell enlisted in May 1940 and served in the Middle East as a captain. He returned to Australia and led the Torres Strait Pioneer Company, formed in 1943 of indigenous men of the Torres Strait. Maj Mitchell was accidentally killed on Thursday Island on 23 May 1945, aged 30.
