Description

Studio portrait of 1743 Private (Pte) Archie Lanchester Gowing, 30th Battalion, of Lindfield, NSW. Pte Archie Gowing enlisted with his brother 1742 Pte Roy Lanchaster Gowing. Both were clerks prior to enlistment, and embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Berrima on 17 December 1915. The brothers transferred to the 13th Battalion and were promoted. Second Lieutenant Archie Gowing was killed in action on 11 April 1917 at Bullecourt, France, aged 25. Lieutenant Roy Gowing returned to Australia on 27 May 1919.
