Studio portrait of 3120 Private (Pte) Reginald Wilfred Williams, 10th Battalion, of Islington, SA. A fireman before enlisting in June 1915, Pte Williams left Australia for Egypt with the 10th Reinforcements in September 1915, and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in March 1916. He was admitted to the 26th General Field Hospital in June 1916 suffering from shell-shock after spending time in the line at Pozieres, and was evacuated to the Convalescent Depot at Cayeux. He rejoined his unit in March 1917 and in June was promoted to the rank of Corporal (Cpl). After spending two weeks in England on leave, Cpl Williams was killed by artillery fire whilst in the line along Zonnebeke Ridge, Belgium, on 1 October 1917, aged 25. Although his burial is documented on his personal service record, he has no known grave.
