Composite group portrait of members of the Main family. From left: 5383 Private (Pte) David Alexander Main, 16th Battalion of Fremantle, WA. A shearer prior to enlistment, Pte D Main embarked on board HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 17 April 1916. He served on the Western Front and died of cerebro-spinal fever at Etaples, France on 4 July 1916, aged 27; 27743 Gunner (Gnr) Robert John (Bob) Main, 3rd Field Artillery Brigade of Fremantle, WA. A shearer prior to enlistment, Gnr R Main embarked on board HMAT Borda (A30) on 20 October 1916. He served on the Western Front and returned to Australia on 12 May 1919; 1159 Sergeant (Sgt) Hugh Acheson Stafford, No 3 Mining Corps of Meekatharra, WA. An engineer prior to enlistment, Sgt Stafford, a brother- in -law of the Mains, embarked on board HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 29 February 1916. He was promoted to sergeant on 4 February 1916. Sgt Stafford was discharged medically unfit due to severe sciatica and returned to Australia on 25 August 1917; 5134 Pte Charles Hay Main, 13th Battalion of Newtown, NSW. A labourer prior to enlistment, Pte C Main embarked on board HMAT Star of Victoria (A16) on 31 March 1916. He was killed in action at Pozieres, France on 14 August 1916, aged 46; 3394 Pte Alfred Ernest Main 53rd Battalion of Bogandra, NSW. A labourer prior to enlistment, Pte A Main embarked aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 5 October 1915. He served on the Western Front and was killed in action at Fromelles, France on 19 July 1916, aged 38; 1627 Pte Walter Sydney Main, 32nd Battalion of Fremantle, WA. A stockman prior to enlistment, Pte W Main embarked on board HMAT Geelong (A2) on 18 November 1915. Suffering from recurring illnesses, Pte Main was discharged as medically unfit and returned to Australia on 17 October 1916. He died on 2 May 1921 following an accident.
