Studio portrait of 4275A Private (Pte) Andrew Oliver Norman 1st Pioneer Battalion of Port Melbourne, Vic. A labourer prior to enlistment, Pte Norman embarked with the 8th Battalion, 13-23 Reinforcements, on board HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 29 December 1915. The 1st Pioneer Battalion was formed in Egypt on 10 March 1916 and Pte Norman was transferred to it a few days later. The Battalion arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 3 April 1916. Pte Norman was hospitalised with shellshock following the fierce campaign at Pozieres, France in August 1916. In early September he rejoined his unit. Pte Norman served on the Western Front with the 1st Pioneer Battalion for the duration of the war. On 25 January 1919 he left France for England but became ill with influenza. Pte Norman died at the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Dartford, England on 14 February 1919. He was 34 years of age.
