Informal portrait of 1058 Lieutenant (Lt) Alan James Kerr, A Company, 24th Battalion, of Camberwell, Vic. Prior to enlisting as a private in the AIF on 19 January 1915, he had risen to the rank of lieutenant with the Senior Cadets, Citizens Military Forces. Pte Kerr embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides on 10 May 1915. He was later commissioned to the rank of lieutenant and was killed in action on 27 July 1916 at Pozieres, France. Lt Kerr also had a brother who enlisted with the AIF, Captain Eric John Kerr, 11th Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps, of Camberwell, Vic, who was killed in action on 4 October 1917 at Ypres, Belgium.
