Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX56893 Corporal Richard 'Dick' Hengoed, 8 Division Provost Company, Second Australian Imperial Force, Singapore and Australia, 1943.
Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one copy of a radio message and one letter relating to Corporal Hengoed. The radio message, received from Singapore on 23 July 1943, is from Corporal Hengoed to his friend, Miss Edna Lewis [misspelled Lewin]. In his message, Corporal Hengoed advises Miss Lewis that he is well, receiving sufficient food, and is housed comfortably. The letter is from the Australian Military Forces Records Office to Miss Edna Lewis, dated 24 August 1943. The letter advises Miss Lewis that the radio message was broadcast by the Japanese as a propaganda programme, and that it should be accepted with reservation.
Corporal Richard Hengoed enlisted to the Second Australian Imperial Force on 9 July 1940. He served with 8 Division Provost Company in Malaya. In February 1942, Corporal Hengoed was captured as a prisoner of war when Singapore fell to the Japanese. He was liberated at the end of the war, and returned to Australia in September 1945. Corporal Hengoed was discharged on 19 December 1945.
