Description
Studio portrait of 489 Trooper (Tpr) Samuel Crowther, 2nd Light Horse Regiment, of Grafton, NSW. A farmer with pre-war service in the cadets and 4th Light Horse Regiment, Citizens' Military Forces (CMF), before enlisting in August 1914, Tpr Crowther left Australia for Egypt in September 1914 and arrived on Gallipoli on 12 May 1915. Tpr Crowther spent just two days on the peninsula before he was killed at Quinns Post on 14 May 1915, aged 19. Tpr Crowther was the younger brother of 582 Sergeant Travice Crowther, 15th Battalion, who was captured at Flers and died whilst a prisoner of war (POW) on 11 February 1917 (see P07782.001).
