Studio portrait of 407367 Sergeant (Sgt) (Air Gunner) Jack Mawdsley, 2 Squadron RAAF, of Lobethal, SA. Sgt Mawdsley enlisted on 14 September 1940. After training as a wireless operator and air gunner in 1941 he was posted to 2 Squadron, Laverton, then left for overseas service. On 12 January 1942 he was killed whilst on operations over the Netherlands East Indies, aged 20. His aircraft, Hudson Bomber A16-46, was one of five aircraft taking part on a strike against enemy ships at Kema Bay, Celebes. They were attacked by Japanese aircraft, two of the five Hudsons being shot down. A16-46 crew members 451 Flight Lieutenant Parker Henry Russell Hodge and 3898 Sgt Harold Claude Shore were also killed. 407715 Pilot Officer Edward David Guildford Howard survived and became a prisoner of war of the Japanese.
