Studio portrait of 475 Private (Pte) John Maddern, 8th Battalion, of Williamstown, Vic. A gardener before enlisting in August 1914, Pte Maddern left Australia for Egypt in October 1914 and served on Gallipoli from May 1915. After the withdrawal from the peninsula in December 1915, he was transferred first to the 60th Battalion in May 1916, then to 58th Battalion in July 1916. Promoted to Lance Corporal (LCpl) in June 1917, LCpl Maddern was killed in action during the German attack on the 58th Battalion positions at Polygon Wood on the 25 September 1917. Aged 26 at the time of his death, he had no known grave.
