Description

Studio portrait of 386 Private (Pte) George Plunkett, 16th Battalion, with an unidentified female companion. A sleeper hewer of Cookernup, WA (originally of Benalla, Victoria), Pte Plunkett embarked with B Company from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ceramic on 22 December 1914. Arriving in Egypt in early February 1915, the battalion undertook further training before landing at Gallipoli late in the afternoon of 25 April 1915. Five days after the landing, Pte Plunkett was killed in action on 30 April 1915, aged 21. Pte Plunkett has no known grave, and his name is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.
