Cadet 419238 Patrick Leo McCartin (left), RAAF, of Geelong, Vic, receiving his winged brevet after graduating as a pilot from an advanced flying school in Canada. McCartin enlisted on 18 July 1942 and after graduating as a pilot, he was promoted to Flying Officer and posted to 75 Squadron, RAF, in 1943. On 20 November 1944, his Lancaster failed to return from an operation over Homberg, Germany, and he and his crew were listed as missing. He was later confirmed killed. He is buried at the Reichswald Forest war cemetery at Kleve, Germany. FO McCartin was named after his Uncle, Lieutenant Leo Aloysius McCartin, MC, who served at Gallipoli and the Western Front during the First World War and who was killed in action in 1918.
