Studio portrait of NX72991 Private (Pte) Abel James Paterson of Dorrigo, NSW. A sawyer before enlisting in the Second AIF in April 1941, Pte Paterson served in the Pacific campaign with the 8th Division Provost Corps, and was captured by Japanese forces at Singapore in February 1942. He died of illess in Burma whilst a prisoner of war (POW) on 20 July 1943, aged 23. Pte Paterson is the older brother of NX175769 Pte Henry Miller Paterson who was killed in action at Balikpapan on 3 July 1945 (see P07834.002).
