Description
Studio portrait of 668A Private (Pte) Cyril Wilfred (Billy) Hammond, 10th Machine Gun Company, of Malvern, Vic. A farmer before enlisting in March 1917, Pte Hammond left Australia for England with the 11th Reinforcements and after transferring to the 39th Battalion, arrived in France for service on the Western Front in December 1917. Pte Hammond was killed by German machine-gun fire during the 10th Brigade's attack on Clery, France, on 31 August 1918, aged 26. He was buried nearby, but the small cross marking his grave was lost in later fighting, and consequently Pte Hammond has no known grave.
