Description

Studio portrait of 2nd Corporal (2Cpl) Frank William Rand, 5th Field Company Engineers, of Hurlstone Park, NSW. A joinery machinist from London who had emigrated to Australia in 1911, 2Cpl Rand enlisted in July 1915 and left Australia for Egypt with the 4th Reinforcments of the 17th Battalion in Septmber 1915. After transferring to the 5th Field Company Engineers, 2Cpl Rand arrived in France for service on the Western Front in March 1916. He was recommended for the Military Medal (MM) for rushing a German position with members of the 19th Battalion whilst making out a communications sap near Morlancourt in May 1918, but it was never granted. Promoted to Corporal, he was sent to England for training at the School of Instruction, but was killed three days after rejoining his unit in France by German artillery fire whilst building a bridge across the Somme river near Clery on 31 August 1918, aged 22. Cpl Rand has no known grave.
