Informal portrait of Allen May and his girlfriend Carmelita cutting birthday cake at Allen May's 21st birthday party. Allen May carried this photograph with him throughout his service in Vietnam. On his return from Vietnam, Allen and Carmelita split up, but met again some years later and married. Carmelita is mentioned in the letter written by Allen May and featured in the film 'A letter from Long Tan', made for the Conflicts: 1945 to Today galleries at the Australian War Memorial.
