Description

Composite studio portrait of 40 Corporal (Cpl) Herbert Close and his family. Cpl Close is posed seated at a writing desk while gazing into the distance. The small portrait in the top corner features his wife Minnie Ellen and his sons Herbert Arthur (left) and John Henry (Harry). A locomotive driver of Campsie, NSW prior to enlistment, Cpl Close embarked with the Railway Unit (No. 1 Section), from Sydney on HMAT Wiltshire on 7 February 1917. He served in France, transferring to the 6th Broadgauge Railway Company, and returned to Australia on 19 April 1919. Cpl Close's son, Herbert Arthur, enlisted in the Second World War. NX68071 Driver (Dvr) Close, 3 Reserve Motor Transport Company, AASC, died of illness on 7 February 1944 on the Burma-Thailand railway, whilst a prisoner of war (POW) of the Japanese.
