On 20 November 1941 Gunner (Gnr) Trenbath's brother, Stoker Third Class (Sto III) Jack Stephen Trenbath, was killed in action, aged 17, when HMAS Sydney II was sunk by the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran. Gnr Trenbath transferred to the RAN in January 1942. He was killed in action, aged 21, when the ship on which he was serving, HMAS Armidale, was attacked and sunk by Japanese aircraft, north west of Darwin, on 1 December 1942.
