Informal portrait of four brothers with their mother Jane Crane. Left to right; 5 Sergeant Drummer (Sgt) Frederick William Crane, 15th Battalion; 21362 Sapper (Spr) Arthur Stafford Crane 2 Signals Squadron; George Crane; 434 Private (Pte) Percy Raymond Crane 17th Machine Gun Company. Sgt Frederick Crane, a civil servant from Mosman, NSW prior to enlistment, embarked with Battalion Headquarters from Melbourne on HMAT Ceramic on 22 December 1914. After contracting dysentery he returned to Australia and was discharged as medically unfit on 2 November 1916. Spr Arthur Crane, a shipping clerk from Mosman, NSW prior to enlistment, embarked with the 1st to 4th Signals Troops Reinforcements from Sydney on SS Port Lyttleton on 24 June 1918 and returned to Australia on18 February 1919. He later went on to serve as a Major in the Australian Army Dental Corps during World War 2. Pte Percy Crane, a military staff clerk, also from Mosman, NSW prior to enlistment, embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements, 1st Anzac Cyclist Battalion from Sydney on HMAT Wiltshire on 22 August 1916. Later transferring to the 17th Machine Gun Company, he returned to Australia on 30 January 1918 suffering from deficient hearing and was discharged as medically unfit.
