Studio portrait of 6490 Private (Pte) George William Leaper Davie, 15th Battalion, of Cooroy, Qld. A labourer before enlisting in June 1916, Pte Davie left Australia for England with the 21st Reinforcements in October 1916 and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in April 1917. Pte Davie was wounded by a German mortar during a working party whilst the battalion were in the line at Ploegsteert Wood, Belgium, on 9 July 1917. He was taken by stretcher bearers to the nearest dressing station but died on arrival, aged 20. According to his Red Cross Wounded and Missing Enquiry Bureau file Pte Davie was buried near Hill 63 in the Messines area but its location was never determined. He has no known grave.
