Studio portrait of VX21828 Lieutenant (later Major) Henry Robert (Bob) Latreille, HQ RAAF Command Allied Air Forces, South West Pacific Area. Major Latreille was killed on active service in New Guinea on 28 October 1944. He enlisted in June 1940, initially as a Lieutenant with the 2/2 Anti Aircraft Regiment, serving in the Middle East. After his return to Australia in March 1942 he was put in charge of No 235 Anti Aircraft Battery at Milne Bay. He was promoted to Major and transferred to the Intelligence Section, serving in Melbourne, Brisbane and Darwin. He is presumed dead whilst on board a Liberator of No 530 Squadon, 380 Bombing Group, USAAF, which experienced engine failure and ditched into the sea. No trace of this aircraft was found in subsequent searches of the area. Another Australian, 2nd pilot 413969 Warrant Officer Stuart Hugh Davidson RAAF was also killed in this crash.
