Description
Studio portrait of 435651 Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) William James (Billy) Cornes of Croydon, NSW. Enlisting in the RAAF in July 1943, Flt Sgt Cornes trained as an air gunner, and was posted to 24 Squadron RAAF. Flt Sgt Cornes was listed as missing after his Liberator bomber, serial number A72-70, failed to return from patrol over Cape Charter, Timor, on 23 January 1945. It was later determined that A72-70 had been hit by Japanese anti-aircraft fire which destroyed the aircraft and killed all eleven Australian crew members, including Flt Sgt Cornes, aged 24.
