Studio portrait of 403314 Sergeant (Sgt) Charles Sydney Butcher of Turramurra, NSW. A customs and shipping clerk before enlisting in the RAAF in Janury 1941, Sgt Butcher trained as a pilot under the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS) in Australia and Canada and was posted to 51 Squadron RAF based at Chivenor, Devon, England. Sgt Butcher was listed as missing when his Whitley bomber, serial number V29119, failed to return from a costal command sortie over the Bay of Biscay on 3 August 1942. He was later listed as having being killed in action, aged 22.
